Data as an Asset Blog

The Only Golden Rule to Derive Value from Dark Data

Use it.

Yes, that’s what enterprises must do, in order to maximize the use of their enterprise data assets. Make sure that every byte of available data is accessible, governed and managed, in order to enable prompt and relevant action.

Use all your available, and act on it.

It is now common knowledge that the digital universe that consists of all the data that we use annually, is doubling in size every twelve months. According to research by IDC it is expected to reach a size of about 44 Zettabytes by 2020. i.e., 44 trillion gigabytes, and will contain as many digital bits as there are stars in the known universe!

Likewise, it is estimated that by 2030, more than 90% of this data will be unstructured data. This explosion of data is of course, far outstripping our capacity to use it. A small fraction of the entire data universe, is in traditional structured form and is easily used by most organizations. A larger section of this data is somehow accessible to a sophisticated few, who are committed to using their data better. But, the vast majority is simply hidden altogether in enterprise applications, going unseen and unused.

And this is what we call “Dark Data” and it is doomed to remain dark, unless enterprise leaders commit to “lightning it up” with judicious use. Today’s forward looking leaders, must create the needed business case to leverage all available data, with the technology available this day and age.

According to IBM, 80% of all this data that is created is dark, unstructured data, data that the computers we have developed over the last 40 years are not able to analyze efficiently. We miss 80% of the knowledge inside this data.

The good news is that with available technology, both data as well as your organization, needed not be left in the dark. The Class-N Operational Data Store is a conceptual target state architecture that will help any organization organize enterprise data, in such a way, so as to extract maximum value out of all available enterprise data. Further details about this concepts is available in The Billion Dollar Byte.

As we near 2020, there is no excuse to have any dark data, lurking around in your enterprise data landscape. If you do for what ever reason, it is perhaps time to set it free and alight.
